mdi ConsultantsOne of the basic objectives of FDA is to provide needed food safety protection for American public. Keeping food safe to eat is paramount, no matter where it is produced, whether conventional or organic, whether the operation is small, medium or large, whether it’s produce or processed foods. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) will transform the nation’s food safety system into one that is based on the prevention of food-borne illnesses rather than primarily reacting to them after they have occurred. It will be a system in which the food industry systematically puts in place measures proven effective in preventing contamination.
During the FY 2016, FDA received a significant increase in budget for implementation of the Final rules for FSMA. During the year 2015, FDA published 2 of the 7 proposed rule in Federal Register and 2 more will be published in 2016. The FSMA funding for 2016 has helped FDA to lay a strong foundation for success of FSMA. The Presidents FY 2017 budget request for FSMA will help FDA in 2 keys areas of
- National Integrated Food Safety System: – The system will help states to enhance their reach to farmers and provide educational, technical and compliance support to them.
- New Import Safety System: – This will help FDA to expand its overseas presence for inspecting the foreign food facilities and will make importers responsible for standard of food products imported to USA.
The implementation of FSMA will help to create a modern, prevention based food safety system ensuring the quality of Food for American public.
