FDA Update
According to the FDA a Permanent Solution to the Baby Formula Supply Chain Shortage is On the Way
A baby formula problem caused by the FDA is that same FDA that is now trying to fix it. As usual, our REACTIVE government came up short in anticipating a problem and did not offer a timely and proper correction.
Previously, FDA has viewed the baby formula as a very special food product (life sustaining food) and made it very difficult for new companies to enter the market. So what was FDA expecting when the main supplier of American-made baby formula voluntarily closed down? It is only when the supply problem became so critical that our government decided to react.
Here is the governments (FDA’s) corrective action:
Following a nightmare supply chain shortage of infant formula in the United States, the FDA is setting up a process to allow foreign formula manufacturers to permanently sell products in the US.
The FDA said in May that it would make it easier to import some baby formulas to ease the nationwide shortage, and the equivalent to more than 400 million 8-ounce bottles has been shipped into the United States from nine countries, the agency said. The agency’s current enforcement discretion guidance, which allows flexibilities in importing formula products, is in effect until November 14, 2022.
The FDA said it would work with the manufacturers to create a streamlined process to enter the formula market in the U.S. This includes hosting meetings with the manufacturers to establish next steps as well as helping them continue to import, sell and distribute formula past November of this calendar year.
Sellers are limiting purchases while the shortage persists. Among those retailers that responded to an inquiry from CNN, at least two — Kroger and Target — say, they are receiving baby formula from the Biden administration’s Operation Fly Formula missions, but purchase limits remain in place. Kroger is limiting purchases to four containers per person, according to spokesperson Erin Rolfes. Target is closely monitoring the formula supply and will continue to have product limits in stores and online. The company is partnering with the federal government to distribute Kendamil formula from the UK. The retailer “is also working to offer additional international baby formula brands to guests,” it said in a statement.
A CVS spokesperson said a purchasing limit remains in place but declined to comment on whether the pharmacy chain has received Operation Fly Formula shipments.
The National Grocers Association, which represents independent retail and wholesale grocers, said it ie Wayge of Infant Formula in the United States, thes not aware of any of its 1,500 members receiving airlifted baby formula.
Walgreens spokesperson Jessica Masuga said the chain also continues to see “increased demand and various supplier challenges.”
